“Go Figure” is Mike Dunn on fiddle and Janet Muse on piano. Janet began by studying classical music at the age of five. She’s been playing for appreciative dancers for over twenty-five years, in several different bands, including the nationally known band, Caledonia. Mike is also classically trained, with expertise in violin and viola, attending Duke University on a music scholarship. He began playing traditional music about fifteen years ago and hasn’t stopped, winning many prizes for fiddle playing at Scottish events and at the Virginia State Fair.
The band “Go Figure” honors the fine traditions of New England-style folk dance music, drawing from sources as diverse as the British Isles, French Canada, and the American Folk style. Their love of waltz music comes through in the band’s recent CD, “Sunday in Greenwood,” full of waltz tunes showcasing artistic and emotional expression. As dance musicians, they’ve performed for contra, English, and Scottish dances throughout Virginia and beyond.
Expect some inventive contra dance tunes and just wonderful waltzes from this duo. The Floyd contra dance attracts all age groups and experience levels—beginners catch on early to instant fun, and experienced dancers add high energy and lots of smiles.
